MCU 300 Monitor and Control Series 300
System Description:
The MCU-300 monitor and control unit is a multipurpose site management system. It is designed to provide a cost effective, reliable means to autonomously monitor and control site functions. Its capabilities include, but are not limited to energy management, site security monitoring and access control, manufacturing and process control, water purification system control, gas and oil extraction and delivery systems, wayside control systems for light rail, fisheries management, aquaculture and agriculture control systems.
It’s a complete SCADA-RTU (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition-Remote Terminal Unit) system incorporating power control, data acquisition processing and logging, alarm monitoring and site control functions all in one neat package.
The MCU includes digital and analog inputs for monitoring of external events and functions, AC power control and power distribution to external equipment, and digital control of external devices. The MCU may be operated locally through its front panel menu driven keyboard and LCD display, or through the external RS-232 data port. Event logging is supported, both to a local printer through a second RS-232 port, and/or to a remote host, via Lotus Notes or your favorite spreadsheet format.
AC Control Features:
Local or remote control of up to 16 internal AC or DC switches. Supports additional relays through expansion port.
Continuous monitoring of internal conditions, switch functions, circuit breakers, and circuit status with activity and alarm reporting.
Supports up to 4 separate AC input circuits (to 40 amps each input), hardware mapped to any combination of 16 outputs (user specified).
Each output is protected with a separate front panel mounted circuit breaker.
Standard outputs use IEC 3 prong AC output connector rated for 15 amps (other configurations available on special order).
All AC switching uses solid state, very low leakage electronic relays; 10 amp to 40 amp single phase. 3 phase versions available.
All relays are provided with transient protection.
Data Acquisition & Processing:
The MCU provides individually configurable transducer excitation, signal conditioning, and filtering for each of 16 analog input channels (12 bit A/D standard, 16 bit optional). Gain and offset functions are programmed in the database.
The MCU also provides for 32 digital inputs with special event trapping (glitch detection) on 16 of the input lines. 16 Digital output lines provided with CMOS level high current drive capability. All inputs and outputs are provided with transient protection. Optical isolation for both analog and digital channels is available for systems requiring high isolation in hazardous environments (common mode rejection >130db, isolation > 3700 VRMS).
The MCU has 4 RS-232 ports available for communication using Ethernet, modems, RF/Wireless modems, etc. These can be used for control, paging, sending email, etc., and for communicating with ‘smart’ transducers, sensors, and instruments. The MCU supports both direct control of such devices, and ‘pass-through’ control, allowing the remote host to communicate directly with the equipment.
Configuration of the MCU database is very easy and straight forward. COS provides a Windows based setup program that allows the user to setup the MCU database and download it to the MCU.
All channel scan rates are individually settable and each channel may be different. Channels may also be configured to scan always; only on an alarm condition; or on a clock alarm, adjustable from one second to one year intervals.
Standard alarm monitoring configurations include four state analog alarm monitoring and digital transition or level detection alarms.
Built in data acquisition software provides filtering and debouncing for both analog and digital signals, conversion to engineering units using user supplied calibrations, and more. Filter options are specified during database setup.
The MCU supports a simple, very direct script language that is used to build functions. These functions are given a name and stored in the database. They may be executed when the clock alarm occurs; on occurrence of an alarm event; as a result of a channel value exceeding a preset limit, etc. The functions can be as simple as turning on a switch (a pump, valve, etc.) or very complex.
Data logging includes logging both to the internal memory and to an external printer (Epson compatible). Both the log interval and condition (on event, on time, etc.) may be specified.
The MCU software supports several HOST interface options across the RS-232 link. These include a direct host interface (only one MCU in the system); a polled RS-232 link (up to 99 MCU’s present in a network) and a dial up modem or RF telemetry link.
Windows based HOST program is supplied which allows direct operator control of the MCU. Pre-coded C library routines for controlling the MCU are also available for linking into user programs. Data accumulated by the MCU data logging function can be downloaded by the host in spreadsheet format (Excel, Quatro, etc.).
Calibrations are available for COS temperature probes, humidity probes, and sensors from other manufacturers.
Other software and hardware options are available include backup generator and automatic transfer switch control, power line monitoring, 48 VDC power systems and distribution systems, and backup battery systems. Ohers are continually being added. Please call COS with your requirements.
Reliability:
The MCU uses a ‘state machine’ design that directly links hardware resources (switches, I/O devices, etc.) to specific software control routines. This prevents accidental or inadvertent operation of the MCU or equipment under its control during adverse conditions (transients, lighting strikes, power failures, etc.).
The MCU incorporates a watchdog monitor and remote reset functions to insure safe, reliable restart under all conditions. The MCU has a built in UPS/battery backup which provides safe ride-through during power outages or transients (up to 4 hours backup time). The MCU is built to MIL standards to provide reliable operation in the most rugged environments.
